Rugby star speaks out

Rugby star speaks out

August 24 2011 via National Heart Foundation.

A dream game of rugby turned into a nightmare for Zac Guildford two years ago after discovering his dad had died suddenly of a heart attack while watching him from the stands.

Rugby star speaks out

The young rugby star’s father, Rob, just 44, suffered a severe heart attack after Zac’s winning game at the under-20 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo.

“I felt my stomach drop when I looked up and mum was waving out to me, then I ran up to the stand and dad was lying there.”

Losing his father at aged 20 has been the toughest thing Zac has had to go through in his life.

“It’s still tough to this day. Every game of rugby I play I dedicate it to him, dad would have loved to have to have been here today, it was probably 30 or 40 years too short.”

“When I’m by myself I still shed a few tears and remember dad when I look at his photos on the wall.”

Zac is supporting the Heart Foundation’s Annual Appeal to raise awareness from his tragic story and encourage people to look after their heart health and if they have any warning signs to get them checked by their doctor.

“I know that he’d [dad] would want me to help out in any way I can so that other people don’t feel like we did and how we still do; struggling with his death and people passing away too early.

“I just want to open people’s minds and make sure they don’t have to deal with what we had to.”
